First we will discuss solar power. Solar power systems use panels with photovoltaic cells to capture the energy from the sun, and convert it into DC electrical power. While many homes and businesses don't use Direct Current, but Alternating Current or AC to produce electricity, it can be changed by simply attaching an inverter between the power supply and the application. You can also harness this power for later use by hooking up batteries, before the inverter, to store excess electrical energy for those time that there isn't any sun, like at night, or during a storm. The next form of renewable energy is through wind turbines. Now you may have seen large wind turbines in farms, and these are much to big for your residence or small business. There are actually two different types of wind turbines available, horizontal, and well as vertical axis turbines. While both can be used for your needs, vertical axis turbines are far more advantageous. In either case, you are helping to create a better world, save the planet, and keep some of that hard earned money in your pocket. Power black out during Super 14 match in Bloemfontein - What will happen during Fifa2010?

On Friday we all got together to watch the Blue Bulls vs. Cheetah's Super 14 match, played in Bloemfontein. I could not believe my eyes' when I saw the stadium had a power failure in the heat of the game!

One of the first Super 14 matches, a global audience, a few months away from the soccer world cup, and one of our stadiums is plunged into darkness during an international match. Not a good picture....

I am, and have been very positive about the World Cup here in South Africa, always pushing against negative sentiment (of which there is unfortunatly a lot). The newspapers voiced there concerns about he blackout in Bloemfontein as well.

I also feel a level of concern, but will rather say this... we can host this cup successfully, and Eskom needs to simply ensure this does not happen anywhere,anyhow in any way shape or form during this massive event... Can they do it? Off course! We have not experienced load shedding in almost 2 years.... surely we can ensure that we are not left in the dark during the World Cup, and give our international visitors the best South African experience they can possibly have...Again I need to state, if our reliance on fossil fuels was not so overwhelming, we could keep the lights on and industries going, through the utilisation of renewable energies, we as individuals can start making the difference...

Vir die gemiddelde Suid-Afrikaanse verbruiker, was 2009 nie 'n maklike jaar nie. Met die wêreldwye resessie, en pryse wat rondom ons styg, is baie huishoude getref.

Daar is drie eenvoudige gevolgtrekkings:

Die probleem sal nie verdwyn nie, indien enigiets, as gevolg van krimpende hulpbronne , sal die probleem eskaleer, en alles wat ons doen op' n daaglikse basis, is afhanklik van elektrisiteit.

South African Electricity Crisis...

Having just moved to a new house,I am unfortunate to have to deal with a number of the normal issues we all deal with when it comes to transfering accounts etc. On of these is the power bill, which has now almost doubled,in comparison to my last house. Not because I am using more electricty, because the property is apparently bigger! Off course the 35% price increase is also to blame. It becomes real when it starts hitting your pocket.

Needless to say though, once I have my DIY solar power system set up in my new house, I will cut out approximatly 75% of that bill, as I did in my last house, DIY Solar and Wind energy is the key

It amazes me how our power utility does their calculations... it also amazes me how we tend to still focus on short term solutions to a long term problem, not just here in SA, but globally. Instead of investing billions into additionlcoal fired power stations, please Eskom, let's focus on renewable energy... wind and sun are plentyfull here, let's use it!

It was no different this Sunday, when Carte Blanche investigated the the recruitment process at Eskom, showing how the "brain drain" has taken it's toll and how many expats from overseas have been brought into Eskom.
